"David, what Little Walter was to the development of the style
we all cherish, you are to the teaching, playing, and preservation of that
style."
Barry Stillwagon
Hello... I want to tell you thank you for
creating the Building Harmonica Technique book. Its one of the best
instructional books Ive come across. It would be easy to go on and on about
how wonder Ive found this book. Its an excellent book for the beginner whos
interested in blues style and has an entry-level ability to bend. It is a book a
person will find challenging and can grow with

"--Dave, I think I speak for quite a lot of folks when I say
how much I appreciate your educational efforts and materials---your transcription and
other books are first rate: well-organized, thorough, easy to follow, clear, well
thought out, and truly valuable -- in short: architecturally correct!"

"Hi: I recently purchased three of your instructional
books in Fargo, ND and they have been extremely helpful. I first started out with Tony
Glovers books years ago and for a beginner such as I, they were hard to
follow... but I did learn a few things...there were books out there but none with tabs and
examples of actually blues licks from an actual instructor. I bought Charlie Musselwhite's
instructional book and record but even that was difficult. Paul Butterfield and John
Sebastion's tapes were OK, but Butterfield would just say the notes are there you just
have to find them, which I found frustrating because I could bend and do a lot of the
techniques, but I had problems finding the notes, being fairly musically inept. So
your tabs of the songs have been a godsend and have actually improved my playing because I
can make sense of the progressions and licks..I was playing way too may notes.. Last
summer, I went Port Townsend, WA and took the Country Blues seminar with Phil
Wiggens,
Mark Graham, and Gary Primich. I improved my playing...vibrato and tone but still I need
help with just figuring out Blues licks. Phil was good with providing tabs and Gary was
informative but really didn't give what I wanted which was, how do you do that lick ?
Sometimes I think Harmonica players are so afraid that someone will steal their licks,
that they are unwilling to teach a few people, who have a strong desire to get better,
anything useful. Most of us out here in the hinterland will never be professional players,
but just have a strong to desire to play the blues and certainly will never be as good or
creative as the masters.. they certainly don't have to worry about us stealing their
licks...anyway...I thank you for the work you have done...as far as I am concerned your
instructional books are the complete package.. they are meant to be studied over and over
and something can always be gleaned from them. Excellent! Good job!"

"I just bought David Barrett's Building Harmonica
Technique. Its a Mel Bay instructional with CD for $17.95 (number MB95167BCD). Previously
I was disappointed with a few harp books that were too basic. This one is for
intermediate/advanced use and I really like it. Anyone know of this particular training
book AND another they think is as good or better for intermediate/advanced blues diatonic
training? 9 out of 10 blues harp books are beginner stuff. This one is a really nice
exception. i would recommend it highly. It got me tongue blocking and tongue slapping plus
much more. I really like his deal where he does a few solos, then plays the background
without his solo for you to work on your solo. Each of these spin in some important new
material to be learned."
Hats off to David ... nice.

........In search of intelligent and useful answers:
What are the best teaching aids for the harmonica teacher? I have been
teaching it for about a year and have spent a lot of money trying different
books, tapes, and methods. I LOVE your series and are my favorite.

"I don't want to embarrass you but I think you are
able to verbally express musical concepts better than anyone I have ever heard. I
thoroughly enjoyed the entire class and look forward to the summer session in June. I had
to leave early on Sunday to go to a meeting but I stayed until the last minute I could,
before I left."

"I think your material is the best out, period, end of
story. I started learning to play in June and have appreciated starting to read music (not
just tab) as well as finding music theory fascinating and extremely well presented by
you."

"First I'd like to thank you for the "Building
Harmonica Technique" book- I now tongue block, play octaves and understand a hell of
a lot more about the instrument. Something like that I feel is like a gift, to be taken on
in whatever way the receiver chooses. I've really appreciated your gift, and I try to pass
on the "goodwill" to others, not just in terms of harp, but also in my
profession-community development."
Yeah so Thanks eh."

"Your books been an invaluable asset to me as a harp
player, and they are the best source I have found for LEARNING the art of harmonica."
Take Care and thanks,

"After struggling on my own with mail-order material, I was
fortunate to find David Barrett in Morgan Hill. I appreciated his ability to
teach the techniques required to play the blues in a systematic fashion that
balanced a formal music background with the improvised style of the blues. I
made very rapid progress with David and recommend him without reservation to
anyone seeking to improve their tone and technical repertoire. His books are the
best at incorporating music theory and blues and are for those seeking a
rigorous approach to learning the harmonica as an instrument."
